Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

* Maker Proposal Due: Midnight (PST): Feb. 27, 2007

* Maker Faire Bay Area Audition: Saturday Feb. 24, 2007
Last year was a big hit. Buzz has agreed to dress up as Santa this year... can you picture that...!? He is the reincarnation of Santa...
Anyhoo... I was thinking that it would be fun if we could get some stilters to accompany him dressed up in holiday costumes and wearing the flaming antlers. Would any of you be available for an hour or two on one or even both days? I think it would be really fun and a great surprise for the kids. I may even do it myself.
The hours are from 11-5 both days.

Hey everyone, here are the details!

We've been given a spot in the parade towards the end of the parade, just in front of the art cars.

Our designated starting point is at 2229 California, several blocks from University. We'll get there at about 9am to get the band's sound check done. You should get there early enough to be ready to go at 11am. You can probably find something near by to get stilted up on - perhaps on our truck. The parade starts at 11am, but since we're at the back, we'll start moving a little later. The truck will have biodiesel signs on it.

The art cars line up on a different street at the beginning of the parade - so don't confuse yourself by looking for us near the art cars before the parade starts.

We should have some space on the trailer that is attached to the truck to carry your stuff.

Don't forget to take water and dress freakily!

The Brazilian band Loxossi is not in the parade because they had way too many people to get onto a float - but they'll be playing at the festival. The band on the truck will be playing funk music. We could start there and wander around however we like.

See you there!
Hello tallies,

The how berkeley can you be parade is going to be amazing this year. Epic Arts in Berkeley is now the organizer, and things are getting FUNKY.

I would like to get a bunch of folks, short or tall, to join me in the parade to WORSHIP the gods & godesses of PETROLEUM. Other cultures who have been dependent on things like corn, fish, good weather, etc. worshipped these things, so shouldn't we be getting down to some tribal worshipping of petroleum? So, the idea is to have a symbol of petroleum (gas pump, oil barrel, flaming oil drilling thing) turned into an altar and pushed through the parade to the sound of tribal drums, with random worshippers dancing around / prostrating, etc. - regular people, business greedy people, george bush, hussein, crusty oily scary freaks, along with some pagan creatures who try to dance/play with the oil obsessed freaks.

Anyone interested please email me!

anyone interested? so let me know if you are in. below are the emails...

>>>
Dear Stilters,
Below is an event that Sara's aunt is helping to orgnize. She would very much like some stilters there. Please let me know if you're interested in stilting and also if you could be the coordinator for this (not very much work in this case).

Its for the Los Altos Food & Wine Festival. They're looking for a couple of stilters each day -- will pay $25 plus entry (food & wine).

>As we talked about - 2 or 3 people for several hours at an hourlly rate, glass for wine, beer. The hospitality suite with food would be open to them as well. We would like to split up their time, to stretch it out, if possible. The dates of the festival are July 10 and ll.>

Hi VonStillt Family!
You are definitely on for the Food and Wine Festival, and it would be
nice to meet you. I was wondering if this e-mail address related to a whole
family stilting - which I guess we are as well (my 7 yr old just learned to stilt without holding hands, but my husband doesn't usually stiltwalk). I live in the Temescal Neighborhood in North Oakland, close to Rockridge, and I'm one of three official officers of WWT. There are about 5-10 active ones in our group, and we meet somewhat irregularly (that reminds me that a meeting is due!) Often we hang out after the Piedmont 4th of July parade. For scheduling a get-togeter, please give me a call - I don't check e-mails regularly enough: 510-601-5512.
Thanks for writing.
Andrea

LIST OF EVENTS:

Blindfold Chicken Race Relay ----------------
Each team lines up single file behind starting line. First person in each line puts on a blindfold and runs like a blind chicken in hell to their teammates hen house on the other side of the playing field. This blind chicken in hell must find their blindfolded chicken teammates via clucks and squawks only. No spoken words or names permitted only chicken noises – so you better develop your own chicken clucking strategies. Continue until all team members are back in line. The first team to complete the relay and all be sitting like hens on eggs
wins.

Frisky Cougar Freeze Dance Extravaganza ----------------
Whose ready to bust a move, get on that groove and shake that rump til Tuesday? AWWWW YEEEEEAAAA......!!!!!!!!! When the music starts, all team members start dancing until all funk is shaken out of their trunk. – when the music stops you must freeze in the position that you are in – if you are caught moving when the music stops, you are thrown out of town. Last one busting moves WINS the gold for their team!

Mattress Relay Race ----------------
This event combines sprinting while lugging a mattress. Pass the mattress to your teammates like a baton. Napping on the mattress is not recommended unless yer team has a strong lead.

Snazzy Sack Race Relay ----------------
Each team lines up single file behind marker. First persons in line get in da sack and hops like a funky bad little bunny to the finish area, turns around and comes back to sit down at the back of his/her team's line. Next person in line then hops like a hell bound rabbit train in a sack and returns to the line and sits down... The first team to complete the relay and all be sitting like soft, quiet bunnies WINS.

Three Legged Relay Race ----------------
Teams break into pairs and tie their inside ankles and knees together with provided ropes and ribbons. Then pairs line up single file behind the marker with your team members. When that whistle blows, first pairs will compete to see who can hobble and wobble to the finish area and back to the starting line and sit down at the end of their line. Then the next pairs go until all team members are done...first team to have all members sitting down WINS.

Country Cracker Whistle Challenge ----------------
Choose one team member of your team to compete against one person from the other teams. When the whistle blows each person eats ten Saltine crackers and then attempts to whistle. Whomever whistles best first WINS!

PVC Point Arena Pole Vault ----------------
Special Guest Referee Sam will lead this death-defying contest of courage. Hurl yourself over the high bar onto a bunch of couches, cushions and matresses with grace and agility to win this game. Each person gets only TWO attempts at each height, before the bar moves up.
Jumping Jack Clothes Switch Relay Race ----------------
When the whistle blows first team member puts on clothes from the provided pile - pants, scarves, dresses, whatever, as fast as possible. When the first member of each team is dressed they run to the other side of the field, take off their provided clothes and the next teammate starts dressing. The key to this event is being able to get dressed andundres sed faster than other teams. First team to have all members returned and sitting WINS.

Tug - A - Whore Race ----------------
Each team chooses who will be their Team Pimp. TP lays down on rug and when the whistle blows, Team A must pull their TP on the rug to the finish line while other Teams creates obstacles to hinder them. The other teams are only allowed to place obstacles in their way – they are not allowed to touch the other team members. Next Team B pulls their TP while Team A creates obstacles. Team with best time wins!

Duct Tape Disaster Challenge ----------------
Special Guest Referee Sam will lead this event as well. Each team selects a pair for this event. Everybody gets 30 seconds to wrap another team pair up in duct tape. After all pairs are wrapped well in duct tape, the real competition will begin. When the whistle blows each pair must break free from their team member. The first pair to be separated wins.

Tug - A - War ----------------
A sheer test of team strength and will. Bring yer gloves if you don't want blisters.

Person vaulting highest wins on fer their team.

May the best, most fhrEAkIesT Team win!
